In July, we gathered a group of Australian basketball supporters and left for Abu Dhabi to witness the Boomers take on both Serbia and the USA.

Highlights from the trip include awesome seats seeing Lebron, Curry and Jokic up close, attending a closed-door Boomers training session, having farewell drinks with Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels, meeting the Australian Ambassador for UAE, sightseeing tours of the city and its Grand Mosque, a desert safari, as well as great food, drinks and 5-star accommodation overlooking the Grand Prix Track.

Game 1 against the USA was a close contest, with Boomers young stars Jock Landale, Josh Giddey & Dyson Daniels putting in work. Unfortunately, USA’s Anthony “the Brow” Davis had a masterclass performance, edging the USA to a 98-92 victory.

Game 2 against Serbia and the NBA’s reigning MVP, Nikola Jokic, was a different story, however. Our skipper, Patty Mills, had a monster game, putting up 28 points and 5 assists, along with healthy contributions from Giddey and Dante Exum. This led to an amazing 84-73 victory for the Boomers, instilling them with confidence going into the Olympics.

The 3rd and final game, USA vs Serbia, wasn’t as tight, with the USA pulling away with a 105-79 victory.

What stood out the most was the varying ages and backgrounds of our guest, their love and knowledge of basketball and the friendships made between them all on tour.  From a father & 16 y/o son from Perth, a 20 year old travelling alone from Broken Hill, 2 couples away from their young families, and some over 65 Sportslink regular veterans mixed in with our 25-40 year olds, it was an experience to remember.

Sportslink Travel 2024 Abu Dhabi Tour was a trip of a life time and I couldn’t recommend this more! My wife and I got up close and personal with the Australian Boomers while they trained at a private location which was one of my personal highlights of the trip. We had a fantastic group of people from all corners of Australia, the tour was very flexible with our personal time but was very organised when it came to events such as the 3 basketball games, the desert safari tour etc!
